Packaging Industry Solutions

The food packaging industry has a wide range of solutions to prevent food waste and extend its shelf life.

PTR uses science and value chain expertise to address these “top 5” questions:
  1. What packaging innovations will be meaningful to consumers and retailers and drive sales?
  2. How can we use packaging to extend the food shelf life and prevent food waste?  This usually relates to getting rid of preservatives and then needing better packaging.
  3. How can we improve the sustainability of packaging? This usually relates to retailer pressure and recent legislation or someone in the company having a passion for sustainability.
  4. How can we lower costs of packaging?
  5. How can make sure our packaging is safe from chemicals of concern?

Then, PTR screens, ranks and implements solutions. This includes:
  1. Value Chain System Solutions in food packaging to address the entire ecosystem of stakeholders including manufacturing, processing and post-consumer.
  2. Packaging to better meet Consumer and Retailer needs - includes a consumers views on a package as well as the sustainability of the packaging and it's disposal, such as recycling and reuse.
  3. Science-based Solutions -  Shelf life testing, MAP, intelligent packaging, better barriers, improved seals, reseal, design expertise
  4. Cost Reduced Packaging -
  5. Systems Innovation Optimization of primary secondary and tertiary packaging
PTR helps clients optimize their food packaging everyday.  We identify the right packaging science and the value chain initiatives for you to optimize your packaging .

Frequently asked questions

How can we use packaging to extend the food shelf life and prevent food waste?
There are 2 types of solutions – science based and value chain based.  These work hand in hand to ensure optimal shelf life at the lowest cost possible.  For example, sometimes a change in secondary packaging can lower the cost of distribution.  Or, a distribution change to save costs means more investment in primary packaging is needed.

How can we lower cost of packaging?
A systems approach is best. This involves assessing the system - primary secondary and tertiary packaging – to allow for distribution, retail shelf space and production speed optimization as well as minimizing package material costs.

How can we use make sure our packaging is safe from chemicals of concern?
First, an assessment of likely sources of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) and intentionally added substances (IAS) is needed first.  This includes processing, packaging materials, and interactions with equipment and the production environment.  This allows focus on only packaging at risk

Second, removal of risk.  This involves testing of packaging materials and food involved and developing and implementing alternatives
Third, development of process to ensure that packaging is not recontaminated with chemicals of concern.
