2024 Food Packaging Prediction

January 2024 Packaging Column

Packaging Topic Brief:

  • My Top 4 food packaging trends for the year include:
  1. Digitalization of Decisions will stimulate innovation: The Digitalization of Decisions in 2024 will enable established and emerging packaging suppliers and brands to swiftly obtain packaging science and technology solutions that address the challenges of our perma-crisis-oriented world.
  2. Packaging will put on the Rizz* (e.g., style, charm, or attractiveness) : Primarily to the advancement of digital printing enabling dynamic printing and workflow.
  3. Food Safety rift used as leverage: To compete, more packaging suppliers are gaining GFSI compliance and developing Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) plans in addition to required Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) to align with customer
  4. More sustainable packaging initiatives will be less holistic and more realistic: There will be a heightened comprehension of the LCI details — scope and peer review process — with a judicious emphasis on sourcing, the sector responsible for most packaging's environmental impact.
