A Bright Future for Bioderived Plastic

  • In 2019, reports show just over 50% of all bioderived polymers are used for packaging; however, changing oil prices and brand and retailer commitments as part of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 12 means bioderived polyers are gaining traction.
  • The rationale for bioderived plastic stems from the fact that the source of plastic used for food packaging impacts the environment significantly.
  • Five promising bioderived polymers—bPE, bPP, bPET, PEF, and PTF—continue to advance and gain popularity for use as barrier polymers in the food industry.
