Packaging Stewardship Certification is “need to do”

Imagine:

 > Your shareholders know your packaging is safe for the environment and consumers

 > Being so confident in your packaging that you can use its safety to  promote your brand

 > Knowing the recycled content you use is actually safe

 > Being confident that your packaging does not contain the "next PFAS"

We can make this imagination become a reality.  We have the deep food packaging science within our proven Packaging Stewardship Certification process.

Consumer awareness, legal activism, and regulatory complexity have created a perfect storm of brand – food and packaging – lack of trust and risk. Sadly, the trust in our food packaging industry has plummeted.   The good news, we have Packaging Stewardship Certification to restore this trust.

Key chemicals of concern in food packaging and food handling equipment

> Medium-chain chlorinated paraffin (MCCP) – plasticizers, mold release agents

> Organohalogens – one of which is PVC – but there are many more

> Perchlorate used as antistatic inside ingredient packaging

> Mineral oils used in paperboard coatings

Sustainability and Chemicals of Concern in Packaging

The European Commission is drafting a report to identify the issues and specific chemicals that will limit the use of recycled content (and reuse) with food.  This is important because PWWR requires recycled content.

Is recycled plastic safe for food contact? If the company making it says so, according to the FDA

COC Regulations

  • A future-looking, prevention-based national food safety strategy
  • Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) published January 22, 2025.  It replaces the 1994 Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD).
    • Distinction between NIAS and IAs is not made
  • 12 states have adopted PFAs in packaging regulations
  • In January, the FDA did some winter cleaning and removed the FCN for 35 PFAS chemicals that are no longer in use.
    • Paperboard w PFAS is still within the recycled paperboard system
    • PFAS that is NIAS can be within packaging
  • Canada’s required reporting on the presence of specific chemicals of interest, specifically PFAS
  • PFAs reporting is mandatory and  optional reporting other chemicals
